Capturing Authenticity: Embracing the Unexpected

Written by Alexander Ogunmola and Young Eta

Photographer Usad isn't your typical shutterbug. He thrives on embracing the unexpected, transforming chance encounters into stunning visuals. Usad's philosophy revolves around capturing authenticity, a concept he brings to life through his unique approach.

"The perfect location doesn't always exist," Usad explains. "Once, I was shooting in a mechanic's village, not exactly the most glamorous backdrop. But then I saw these wild dogs roaming around. It reminded me that you can always make the best of what you have."

This anecdote perfectly encapsulates Usad's adaptability. He doesn't get bogged down by preconceived notions; instead, he uses his environment to tell a story. His ability to think on his feet is further exemplified by another story:

"I was on a beach shoot, desperately trying to capture that perfect shot," Usad recalls. "Suddenly, a horse and its owner walked by. I took a chance, asked if we could use them for a few pictures, and those ended up being the best of the day! It was pure magic."

Usad's aversion to overly structured poses shines through in his approach to his subjects. "Authenticity is key," he says. "I prefer letting people be themselves. Forced poses look unnatural."

This philosophy manifests beautifully in a recent project with an up-and-coming artist. "Instead of the typical studio shoot," Usad explains, "I wanted to capture them in their natural habitat. We took pictures in their apartment and then followed them to the beach. It felt real, unforced—exactly the vibe I was going for."

Usad's advice for aspiring photographers? Embrace the unexpected. Let go of rigidity and be open to the possibilities that present themselves. After all, sometimes the most captivating photos are the ones you never planned for.
